Mafia Strategy Guide: How to Win as Every Role

Mafia is a game about information and trust. The Mafia know who everyone is, and the town does not. Everything you do, from how you vote to when you speak, is a signal. This guide covers each role and what tends to work.

How a round works

Each night the Mafia secretly choose a victim in a private chat that only they can read. The Doctor protects one player, and the Detective investigates one. In the morning the night's result is announced, the town discusses and then votes someone out. The game ends when the Mafia are all gone or when they equal the number of villagers.

Players who are eliminated move to a ghost chat. If you are out early, you can still follow the game and enjoy the story.

Playing a Villager

Your power is your vote and your voice. Talk early, give reasons and listen to the reasons of others. Players who say nothing are hard to read, and players who change their story are easy to catch.

Do not vote just because everyone else is. Ask the player being accused to explain themselves, and watch how they answer. A calm, specific answer is a better sign than an angry denial.

Playing the Detective

Each night you learn whether one player is Mafia. That is strong information, but sharing it too early can get you killed. A good habit is to keep results to yourself for a night or two, then reveal when you can name a guilty player and the town is willing to follow you.

If you reveal that you are the Detective, expect to be targeted. If you think you are about to be eliminated, say what you know before you go.

Playing the Doctor

You can protect one player each night, including yourself if the game allows it. The Mafia are trying to predict you, so avoid patterns. Protecting the loudest player every night is predictable.

Think about who the Mafia would want to kill most: the player who seems to be gathering information or leading the town. Protecting that player is often the best choice.

Playing the Jester

The Jester is an optional role in groups of five or more. You have no night action, and you win alone if the town votes you out. That means you want to look suspicious, but not so suspicious that the town ignores you.

Make slightly strange accusations, change your mind in public and act nervous at the right moments. Do not be too obvious, or players will realise that you are trying to be voted out.

Playing the Mafia

Your goal is to be believable. Use the private chat to agree who to target and, just as important, who to blame in the morning. Vote with the town most of the time, and avoid defending your teammates too strongly.

A useful trick is to accuse a teammate early, with weak reasons, so that you look like you are not protecting them. Do this only when the team has agreed, because it costs you a player if the town believes you.

Habits of good players

Keep notes about who voted for whom. Patterns matter more than any one vote. Ask direct questions, and notice who avoids answering. Most of all, be consistent: if your story changes from round to round, someone will notice.
